D24 XO Durian FAQ

What is D24 XO Durian?

The D24 Durian, also known as the Sultan Durian, is a celebrated durian clone in Malaysia. Before the ascent of the Musang King or Mao Shan Wang, the durian D24 was the most sought-after variety. Its yellow, thick, and firm flesh is both slightly sweet and intense. During peak season, the best D24 durians are notably dry and firm, locally termed “Gan Bao”. Its outstanding taste combined with an affordable price makes it a top contender for the title of “The People’s Choice Award.”

Moreover, the D24 XO durian, a variant of D24, is esteemed for its rich, creamy texture. Belonging to the Musang King or Mao Shan Wang family, it’s often regarded as the “king of fruits” by durian lovers and fruit enthusiasts for its distinct flavour.

What is the origin of the D24 XO Durian?

The D24 XO durian, commonly nicknamed the Sultan, hails from Malaysia, where it flourishes in the lush orchards of its tropical regions. This variety has roots in areas such as Pahang, Johor, and the Cameron Highlands. Despite its esteemed title, there aren’t many tales surrounding the Sultan. It was first introduced in these specific regions and rapidly rose to prominence. During the 90s, the D24 was the undisputed Sultan among all durian varieties and, even today, it continues to command a massive fan base. The tropical climate and fertile soil of Malaysia play nothing short of a pivotal role in ensuring the outstanding quality of the D24 XO durian.

How do durian lovers identify a D24 XO Durian?

Identifying a D24 XO Durian can be done by examining its outer appearance. Look for these characteristics in a durian:

  • A typically round and smaller husk shape compared to the Musang King.
  • A homogenous green husk colour.
  • A curvy tip on the spikes resembles a hook, which can be sharp and painful when touched.
  • Spikes around the crown tend to point inward towards the stem.
  • Features a distinct seam at the bottom, roughly the size of a 5-cent coin.
  • Generally, D24 durians have a relatively short stem compared to other varieties.

What is the taste of the D24 XO Durian?

The D24 durian offers a flavour profile that is a delightful mix of sweetness, creaminess, and a touch of bitterness. The flesh boasts a paler yellow hue and a stringy texture punctuated by a pronounced bittersweet taste. What makes the D24 particularly intriguing is the occasional hint of an alcoholic taste, which is especially prominent in its “XO” variant. This unique durian also emits a distinct aroma, reminiscent of sweet custard combined with almonds. Its smooth and velvety consistency is a joy for both seasoned durian enthusiasts and newcomers. Indeed, those trying durian for the first time would find the D24 a perfect introduction, as its captivating taste leaves many yearning for more.

What is the price of the D24 XO Durian during the durian season?

The price point of the D24 XO durian during the durian season can vary depending on factors such as size, quality, supply, and location. Prices are often higher during the peak durian season and may vary regionally. To get the most accurate pricing information, it is advisable to check with local durian sellers or visit our website for current prices.

What is the difference between XO & D24 durian?

The XO durians belong to the D24 family. However, these two durians contain their own unique characteristics. The D24 is known for having a paler yellow colour, with a stringy texture and not as sweet with a hint of bitterness. On the other hand, XO Durian, which stands for ‘extra old,’ is aged longer, resulting in a more intense and complex flavour profile. The XO durian is often considered a premium variety due to its unique taste and aroma.

Does XO durian have alcohol?

The XO durian does not contain alcohol. The term ‘XO’ in the XO durian refers to its ageing and fermentation process, similar to how aged wines or cognacs are labelled. The XO durian is allowed to ripen on the tree for an extended period, enhancing its flavour and aroma. It does not contain any alcoholic content and is safe for consumption.
